Manufacturing/Production Experience:

  • Partner, Engineering and Production Manager in a UL/FM fire protection system manufacturer.     Performed ownership duties and managed   engineering in a manufacturing facility providing  fire pumps and UL/FM listed fire pump systems for both electric and diesel drives.    The facility  operated a full machine shop, assembly, a Class 1000 clean  room, shipping and receiving.   Managed processes leading to a UL/FM listing  for several pieces of equipment as well as NFPA certification as well as, managed processes leading to an ISO 9001 certification.


  • Production supervisor for five years throughout a U.S. paper mill including paper machines,  stock preparation, finishing and coating.   Acted as liaison between engineering and production for many projects due to background in both areas. Well versed in safety and safe work environments. Trained as management representative in the emergency medical response team    (EMT), mill fire brigade, confined space rescue team and disaster management team. Member of    the mill Central Safety Committee for three years.



Material Transfer:

Provided Project Management and Engineering responsibilities for the following:


  • An elevated belt conveyor system transporting pressed sludge for about 1/3 mile. The system included a fiber sludge press process on the feed  end and transfer conveyors on the receiving end. The project also included upgrades to existing coal and hog fuel conveying system which required integration into the new belt conveyor. The fuel was fed to an existing hog fuel boiler which was also upgraded as part of the project.


  • Several pulp and paper bale, roll handling, pallet and material transport conveying systems.   Systems included roller, pallet, pneumatic and belt conveying. Typical systems included  material feed and transfer, accumulation, turning and transferring sections, bins, silos, stacking and outfeed accommodations.


  •  Several material transport projects for rock and cement facilities including stacking and recovery, troughed belt, inclined belt, vertical belt and apron belt conveyors as well as bucket elevators. Systems included material infeed and outfeed systems for crushers, pulverizers, grizzlies, hammer mills, vibratory and static separating screens, bins and silos.


  • A calcium carbonate transfer system using dense and dilute phase pneumatic conveying. The system transported material between two plants for approximately one-third of a mile distance. The project included all storage silos, feed hoppers, pressure vessels, transport lines, bridge structures, receiving bins and material transport within both plants. Project included the interfacing of material processing on either end of the conveying system. 


  • Several lumber handling and processing systems including sawing and re-sawing lugged chain conveyors, transfer conveyors, unscrambling conveyors, palletizing and stacking systems as well as associated pneumatic supply systems.


Boiler and Steam Generation Experience:

Provided Project Management, Project Engineering, Detailed Design and Site Construction responsibilities for the following:


  • A condensate polishing system used to clarify and treat condensate from a western U.S. paper mill collection system. Project included equipment layout, P&ID generation, structural analysis and design, piping system layout and stress analysis.


  • Upgrades to a hog fuel-fired stoker-type boiler at a western U.S. paper mill. Significant involvement and contributions to early planning, vendor study and project definition. The project ultimately included upgrades to the fuel delivery and feed system, new over-fire air and air delivery system and grate improvements as well as economizer improvements. A sludge delivery system was added to feed clarified sludge via a nearly 1/3-mile elevated conveyor system to the fuel mix. New backend emissions controls were added including multi-clones, dry ESP (electro-static precipitator) and Trona sulfur control. New ash handing storage and silo were also added. The project included upgrades to the existing hog fuel and coal feed conveyors.


  • Several package boiler installations within several industrial facilities to provide primary or backup steam generation for processing facilities, the projects included associated structural improvements, system piping, feedwater treatment and delivery systems, fuel-gas trains, emission controls, equipment specification and procurement, P&ID generation and stress analysis.


  • Provided Project Engineering and supervision for the successful troubleshooting and correction of a condensate system on a group of heat exchangers and other steam system improvements. Project markedly improved efficiency by improving and capturing multiple condensate streams.

Energy Production Experience:

Provided Project Management and Project Engineering responsibilities for the following:


  • Several cogeneration facility projects in the western U.S. The projects consisted of site selection and development and design/specification/bidding of fuel receiving and storage systems, coal fired boiler and turbine islands, fire protection systems, storage silo and tank selection and specification, air quality control system (AQCS), propane fired backup packaged boiler system, water treatment, steam distribution, limestone and ash handling, switchyard and power and controls distribution. Managed the development of the design basis report and documentation for the projects.


  • The Preliminary design of a green-field 43-Mwe gross output lignite-fired circulating fluidized bed (CFB) cogeneration facility in the western U.S. The project consisted of site selection and development and design/specification/bidding of fuel receiving and storage systems, 600,000 pph steam CFB boiler and turbine island, air quality control system (AQCS), propane fired backup boiler system, water treatment, steam distribution, limestone and ash handling, switchyard and power and controls distribution. Managed the development of the design basis report and documentation for the entire project.


  • The Preliminary design of a green-field 25-Mwe gross output Powder River Basin (PRB) coal-fired CFB cogeneration facility in the western U.S. The project consisted of site selection and development and design/specification/bidding of fuel receiving and storage systems, 300,000 pph steam CFB boiler and turbine island, air quality control system (AQCS), propane fired backup boiler system, water treatment, steam distribution, limestone and ash handling, switchyard and power and controls distribution. Managed the development of the design basis report and documentation for the entire project.


  • Project Engineer for preliminary design of a green-field 5-Mwe gross output Powder River Basin (PRB) coal-fired BFB (bubbling fluidized bed) cogeneration facility in the western U.S. The project consisted of site selection and development and design/specification/bidding of fuel receiving and storage systems, 150,000 pph steam BFB boiler and turbine island, air quality control system (AQCS), propane fired backup boiler system, water treatment, steam distribution, limestone and ash handling, switchyard and power and controls distribution. Managed the development of the design basis report and documentation for the entire project.


  • Provided Procurement Management and Project Engineering responsibilities for a 100-Megawatt (MW) combined heat and power (CHP) coal fired power generation facility located in North Dakota. Managed the procurement of equipment worth over $60MM as well as specifications development, formulating bid procedures, engineering and client consulting for the equipment which included a wide variety of troughed conveyors, transfer conveyors, bucket elevators, vibratory rail car material hoppers, belt magnets, bins, silos, railcar heating, ash handling conveying systems, circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers, steam turbines and backend environmental equipment. The facility design included considerations for covered unloading of frozen coal unit trains, transfer and storage of material using conveying and feeding systems, a multi-stage extracting turbine generator and CFB boilers and with all required backend environmental controls.

Pulp and Paper:


Project Manager/Engineer and Construction Management for several Pulp and Paper projects including:


  • Improvements to a size press and reel system including system layout, equipment selection and stress analysis.


  • Installation of a continuous blending system including implementation and training for a Distributed Control System (DCS).


  • Upgrades to a wet-end pulp cleaning system, including system analysis, P&ID updates, system balancing, equipment layout and piping arrangements.


  • Several projects to speed-up a paper machines including pulping system and material handling improvements.


  • Paper machine upgrade at a U.S. Kraft paper mill, including upgrades to an oil distribution system, headbox upgrades, instrument air supply for entire machine and reel rebuild.


  • Project Engineer and production liaison for a project which automated a batch stock blending system and converted it to continuous blending. The project included early system development and definition, P&ID generation, system engineering, controls engineering, construction supervision, startup assistance and operator training.


  • Project and Mechanical Engineer for several paper machine speed up projects including stock feed, screening and headbox upgrades, press and dryer section rebuilds, controls modifications, broke system upgrades, reel and spool handling upgrades as well as auxiliary systems such as roll lubricating systems and dryer frame analysis.
